Sexual Abuse of Penan's Girl a.k.a Government!, I've told you so!

The news I saw in The Star today really breaks my heart into zillion pieces.

Last year I've made a posting about the sexual abuse faced by Penan girls.
In the beginning, the government just brush the issue off saying that it is just a baseless rumour by this so called NGO (Bruno Manser Fonds). I even wrote to a paper asking the authority to 'take action not just talk' (but it wasn't published). The government said this Organisation has no bussiness interfering with the life of the Penan people and to stop making false accusation.

But now, the truth has been revealed:

(taken from The Star newspaper, 11th Sept 09)

The rape of young Penan girls

Allegations of Penan girls and women being raped and molested by timber company workers in the Baram district in Sarawak have been confi rmed to be true.

A special committee set up by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry revealed that at least seven girls and women were raped and molested - confi rming a news report by The Star late last year.

The horror the Penan girls and women went through.

> A girl, 12, was raped by a stranger outside her hostel and by a timber worker when she took a lift in a timber company’s vehicle from her village in Long Kawi to her school in Long Lama. She got pregnant, quit school and married a Penan man.

> A woman from Long Item was raped by a timber worker in 2005 and 2007 and gave birth to a baby girl, now two years old.

> One was raped by an Iban timber worker when she was kidnapped at the age of 13, while visiting her relatives in Miri.

> One was almost raped when she took a lift with her father from a timber company to apply for an identity card.

> In Long Muboi, a student said her 14-year-old friend was molested by a truck driver who gave her a lift to school.

> A 17-year-old girl gave birth to a child and her neighbours claimed that she had sexual relations with the timber workers.

> A group of women said they believed that sex exploitation exists among the Penan women and girls but they were too ashamed to tell their stories.

The saddest part is, most of the girls are heading to school when the abuse happened.

Stupid timber workers..
Stupid men..
Stupid government who takes too much time investigating (and stupidly said it was a false claim earlier)..
Stupid people who called themselves a Malaysian but don't care enough about fellow Malaysian suffering in their own country but willingly pay a hefty sums of money to other people suffering way across the globe.. (The Penans suffered from failed crops for the last two months but only a few listened to their plight)

Suddenly, I remember a case from Eli Stone (a tv programe), a lawyer. He was suffering from aneurysm and in one of the episodes, he had a vision that an earthquake is going to happen in the next three days and the famous Golden Gate Bridge is going to collapse. He fights in court to get the Bridge closed on that day so that thousand of lives can be save, nobody believed him, he was subjected to ridicule. But the most important person believed in him, The Mayor

I should't be asking this but what if I am wrong?" Eli asked the Mayor.

"But what if you're right?" said the Mayor...

Dear Malaysian Government,

Next time, please listen you dum* Fu(< @$$h0!e!!

Additional newspaper report:

KUCHING: It has been confirmed that Penan girls and women were raped and molested by timber company workers in Sarawak’s Ulu Baram district.

A special committee, set up by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, revealed that sexual abuses against Penan women and girls by timber workers as reported by The Star last year did take place in the Baram district.

The special committee, set up last October to investigate the allegations, documented at least eight cases of rape and molest of Penan women and girls in its report.

The report said one of the victims was raped by a timber worker when she hitched a ride in the company’s vehicle to go to school.

Another was raped twice, in 2005 and 2007, by a man she recognised as a timber worker at a logging camp.

The report also said schoolgirls were often molested by lorry drivers while travelling to school in timber company vehicles.

It documented one incident where a lorry driver groped a 14-year-old girl’s breasts.

In another incident, it said a lorry driver tried to molest a group of 10-year-old girls, but they escaped.

The report concluded that “allegations of sexual abuse against Penan girls and women by outsiders, includ ing timber workers, did indeed occur”.

It highlighted the vulnerability of Penan schoolgirls to such abuse because of their dependence on timber vehicles to transport them to and from school.

“Logging tracks are often the only means of access to their villages,” it said, adding that schools and clinics were four to six hours away.

On addressing the sexual abuse, the report called for programmes to raise awareness among the Penans on personal safety, sex educa tion and violence against women.

It also recommended the appointment of “trusted” lorry drivers and student management assistants to escort Penan schoolchildren back to their villages.

The report also found that the Penans had little access to registration, healthcare and education due to poverty and the remoteness of their settlements. It said many Penans did not have personal documents while their children had a high drop-out rate at school.

“All these issues are closely related to imbalanced development. The lack of infrastructure such as roads and public transport make it difficult for the Penans to communicate with the outside world, including government agencies.

“The Penans also feel neglected because of negative perceptions and prejudices against them,” it said.

Meanwhile, the Bruno Manser Fund, which first broke the Penans’ allegations of sexual abuse last September, welcomed the release of the special committee’s report.

However, it voiced concern that the report did not have any legal consequences for the perpetrators.

“It is high time that those responsible for the crimes described in the report face the legal consequences of their conduct,” it said in a statement released on the Borneo Project web site.

Dessert 101

I had a serious craving for Buah Melaka (palm sugar ball) yesterday.

Luckily mom already taught me before I was posted here, deep in the jungle of Sarawak (it is not that deep actually ;) )..

The ingredient is so basic and preparation is only 10 minutes flat.

Ingredient
  • a pinch of salt
  • a tablespoon of coconut milk powder
  • water
  • rice flour
  • glutinous flour.
1 scoop (or ladle) of rice flour for every 3 scoops of glutinous flour

  • palm sugar (solid or liquid)
  • Dessicated coconut and sprinkle of sugar for coating

The margarine tin is for storing my rice flour only hehe

Combine all the ingredient (flours, coconut powder, salt) and rub them together, adding a little bit of water until they become like....

... this

this is palm sugar (solid)

The ball is ready when it floats

Dessicated sugar and sprinkle of sugar

Tada....
It is really yummy and can create a lot of mess.. :)

What is Wrong with People Nowadays?

Aku bengang la... what the 'heaven' is wrong with people nowadays? Kalau nak mintak tolong, macam baik sangat-sangat-sangat-sangat... tapi kalau mintak menolong macam tak kenal langsung..

Kalau aku tulis camni mesti orang kata aku ni tak ikhlas dan tolong orang sebab nak balasan. Tapi aku rasa korang pun paham, the wheel of life will always turn.

Kadang-kadang orang susah; kita tolong dan kadang-kadang kita susah dan perlu pertolongan orang. Tapi kalau asyik-asyik kita aje menolong tapi orang lain tak tolong kita.. tak bengang ke?

Bukan aku tolong tak ikhlas atau harap orang membalas pertolongan. Aku pun pernah gak tolak permintaan orang.. tapi kalau ya pun tak dapat tolong, selalunya aku cakap baik-baik..

Tapi kalau jawapan dia..

"Ala.. takde orang lain ke?"

"Susahla, penat harini"

"Eh. tak boleh, tak boleh.."

What the frog man?? Benci aku dengar.. pastu terus aku rasa macam tak nak tolong lagi sampai akhir hayat aku..

Tapi nanti tolong jugak.. tu la masalah aku ni.. Kawan-kawan aku pun pernah tegur sebab nampak macam dipergunakan aje.. taknak la aku tulis apa yang aku pernah tolong.. aku tau, tak baik mengungkit...

Jawab sikit... Aku dipergunakan ke?

Kuching Trip Anyone?

City Of Kuching (Cats) Famous Monument

Suddenly I feel like going to Kuching for a short vacation... Hmm.. October seems open for me.

First of all, I need a plan..

I need a budget.. around RM5oo maybe? (2 pax). I will be towing Well along of course.

Accomadation wise, Liwah Hotel seems nice (read: affordable) and is situated in strategic location.

Mode of transport?

The best thing about going to Kuching is that I can choose whether I want to travel by:

air (..Asia), which will take approximately 45 minutes (but it is the most EXPENSIVE way to travel)

land, 6 to 7 hours gruelling RM45 journey which I can't stand (need to pee often hehe)..

... or sea, also will set me back for RM45, which will take about 4-5 hours depending on the weather condition. But the pessengers can walk around the boat (plus... they have toilet)

Anybody wanna join my trip?

Angan-angan Waktu Kecik.

Masa aku kecik dulu, sampai je time TV tunjuk waktu berbuka & imsak, mesti aku berangan nak dok kat Sabah @ Sarawak..

Reason: Diorang berbuka awal sejam banding ngan tempat aku (kat Melaka waktu tu)

Skang dah pun besar panjang & angan-angan pun dah jadi kenyataan. Masuk tahun ni dah 4 tahun aku puasa kat Kapit, Sarawak ni (and pernah sambut 1 Syawal kat sini.. Jangan tak caya)

Best ke?

Hmm.. Ntah.. Rindu plak aku kat Semenanjung... ;(

Betolla agaknya orang cakap.

Better be careful of what you are wishing for, sometimes dreams do come true

Sigh!

Ramadhan- Lesson To Be Learnt

Wednesday, 26th August 2009 (4th Ramadhan), 0944

I got this from a friend.. Really made me think hard... and grateful for what I have..

Lessons From The Son

One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people can be.

They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son,
"How was the trip?"
"It was great, Dad."
"Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked.
"Oh Yeah" said the son.

"So what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father.

We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden
but they have a creek that has no end.

We have imported lanterns in our garden
but they have the stars at night.

Our patio reaches to the front yard
but they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on
but they have fields that go beyond our sight.

We have servants who serve us,
but they serve others.

We buy our food,
but they grow theirs.

We have walls around our property to protect us,
they have friends to protect them.

With this the boy's father was speechless.

Then his son added, "Thanks dad for showing me how ungrateful we truly are"

You can't buy any of these things.

You can have all the material possessions you can imagine, provisions for the future, but if you are poor of spirit, you have nothing!
Too many times we forget what we have and concentrate on what we don't have.

If one is satisfied with small provision from Allah, Allah will be satisfied with a few good deeds from him

A Walk Around Kapit

Monday, 24th August 2009 (3rd Ramadhan), 1750

Since the wi-fi connection was down since yesterday, (kalau tak, bertapalah aku depan laptop ni dari pagi sampai nak berbuka) I managed to run a lot of important errands today.

Pagi-pagi lagi aku dah pergi sekolah, cari Kak Siti kat Opis, konon nak check whether gambar-gambar kek lapis Sarawak yang aku booking tu dah siap di print
(haha.. kemaruk betul, kek lom siap dapat tengok pics pun jadi ler).
Ye lah aku selamber katak je order 'hati pari' la, 'lapis kandos'la, 'lapis tembikai'la, 'ntah apa-apa lagi'la.. Nak gak tengok camane sebenarnya rupa menatang tu.. mana tau tak chantek.. leh tukar...
"Belum" senang je makcik ni jawab. Kempunan aku..

Then pegi Wisma Persekutuan, Jabatan Imigresen.. Settle hal Pasport aku yang tersilap chop.. Ni dah masuk kali ketiga aku pi.. asyik "pegawai berkenaan takde" je jawabnye. But today is my lucky day, pegawai berkenan ada...

Urus pasport jap then turun first floor, pi Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara nak tanya pasal bayaran replace I.C. yang chip rosak. Seploh hinggit je rupanya, takde la mahal. Rupa-rupanya kalu hilang baru kena bayar RM110..

Kebetulan jumpa ngan Haire tengah nak wat I.C. yang kena curik kat bilik guru. Aku tak tau citer pun coz aku quarantine waktu kes curik tu.. Wallet, kad atm, kad kredit, duit RM 300++ abis lenyap.. Sian kat mamat ni.. Dan tadi juga 1st time aku borak panjang ngan dia lepas kes gaduh tahun 2005, aku ngan dia penah jadi bestest friend (long story.. looong time ago). Rindu gak nak borak-borak panjang. Yelah.. dulu hari-hari borak merapu.. housemate la katakan.. Hmm... Peluang untuk berbaik-baik semula kot? Ramadhan.. Ramadhan......

Borak punya borak keluar macam-macam cerita sampaila cerita pasal tunang aku yang dia pun kenal.. pasal aku yang selamba katak tak amik kursus kahwin lagi, pasal problems aku yang berlambak dengan bakal mak mentua, pastu adala ngumpat sikit pasal wang hantaran yang mendapat respon ulamak-oih-ayoyo-jual-anak-ke-aper? dan jugak bila aku disclose harga upah jahit baju nikah yang mendapat respon pergh-srupa-ko-kawin-ngan-artis-la-ini-macam.
(this is one of the reasons blog ini tak diketahui oleh relatives, siblings mahupun fiance hahaha) dan bila pasal duit, tentulah timbul hal loan.. Aku dah lama pikir pasal loan ni, tapi asyik takde masa je coz Bank Rakyat kat Sibu ade la.. sini mana der.. So dia cadangkan Agro Bank yang katanya interestnya ok jugak and dengan poyo nyer suh aku berambus masa tu jugak. Dia kata dia tau perangai aku, kalu aku tak pi sekarang memang tak pi sampai bila-bilala jawabnya. (which is true dan membuatkan aku teringat kenangan aku lama-lama masa satu rumah ngan dia dulu .. sedey.. sedey.. sob! sob!)

So next destination... Agro Bank..
Pergi sana dah dekat pukul 1200 so aku terus citer bla bla bla then dia tanya soklan yang aku lupa nak pikir

'Incik nak buat loan berapa banyak n berapa tahun?'

Aiseh! Macammana aku bleh sembrono pegi bank tak buat perancangan ni? Aku pun kata nanti aku pikir.
(mesti brader ni ingat aku memain, dah la pakai baju paling hansap yang aku ada, makhluk paling selekeh kat Kapit la masa tu hahaha, dengan lencun peluhnyer lagi)
dia bagi borang and aku pi buat buku. Kebetulan plak yang kat kaunter tu mamat yang ikut Bengkel Pengacara Majlis itu hari, aiseh Jejak Kasih la sekejap, dah la aku terlupa nama dia.. Burn.. ha Burn nama dia.. Tapi dah kuar bank baru aku ingat la...
(tak aci memangla dia tau nama aku sapa, sah-sah la aku bagi I.C. (chip rosak) aku kat dia..)

Then pegi Andy Emporium, settle pasal billing barang-barang drama yang still belum dibuat bill.. Pergh bila dah kumpul-kumpul.. banyak la plak.. Harap Mr. Douglas will be okay with this..

Afterwards, pi CCK tempat jual frozen stuff (The one and only halal frozen food shop in Kapit).. Kempunan plak tengok Salmon fish-ball.. so belasah satu packet (pergh RM 10.00.. mahal giler dah la kecit)..

So pastu aku pun balik ngan rasa satisfiednyer.. Yelah aku buat tu semua dengan barjalan kaki di bulan Ramadhan.. dari satu tempat ke satu tempat.. Dalam hati dah berkobar-kobar dah.. On the way balik singgah stor Physical Ed. jap nak timbang. Sure kurang dari semalam..
